New Jersey teens teach Jamaican importance of dental care

New Jersey teens teach Jamaicans importance of dental care Children in poorer parts of the world often have no access to dental care, leaving them to struggle through their oral health problems without any treatment.

A group of high school students from Montclair, New Jersey recently took a trip to Jamaica to see how bad the problem can be and to try to do something about it.

A group of eight teenagers from the town spent five days in the impoverished island nation learning about the state of dental care and educating children on how to take better care of their teeth, according to the Montclair Times.

Nicole McGrath, a local dentist who led the trip, told the news source that children living in poor nations, and even underprivileged parts of this country, have little chance of maintaining proper dental health when care is so scarce.

"The kids in Jamaica, or in other countries, if they have an abscess or a toothache, they suffer through it. If they don't have the funds, which a majority of them don't, it's just a matter of household remedies to ease that pain," she said

While it may be difficult for low-income families in the U.S. to pay for dental insurance, there are many discount dental plans that can help families pay for dental care.
