Communities look to cut fluoridation to save money

Communities look to cut fluoridation to save money As cities and towns across the country are looking to close massive budget gaps, many are looking to cut water fluoridation from their spending, causing public health officials to voice their support for continuing the practice.

Many dental experts say that fluoridation of public water supplies was one of the greatest advancements in public health in the 20th century for greatly improving dental health. But 21st century budgetary concerns have forced some municipals governments across the country to consider dumping the practice.

Sacramento's City Council recently took up the matter after an independent budget consultant estimated the city could save $836,000 per year, according to the Sacramento Press. The city is currently looking to close a $43 million budget gap.

However, dentists, school nurses and public health officials convened at a recent meeting of the council to protest the move.

Pauline Tracey, a school nurse at a city high school, told the council that water fluoridation is an invaluable tool for preventing cavities in young people and is "an effective, beneficial way to prevent both decay and promote the dental health of our students and the community at large," as quoted by the news source.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that water fluoridation can actually be an effective way for communities to save money by preventing the need for costly dental procedures.
