Patients line up for free dental services

Patients line up for free dental services With many employers cutting back on benefits during the recession, dental care is becoming harder to come by for millions of Americans.

A growing number of these people without dental insurance is relying on free dental clinics being offered by public health departments and dentist offices across the country.

One dentist in Vestal, New York, recently held a day of free dental care, during which he offered 100 patients a free cleaning, filling or tooth extraction, according to local Fox affiliate, WICZ.

The news source reported that people began lining up for treatment hours before the event started, and many of the patients were seeking treatments that they wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise.

"I think it's great because it helps people to ensure themselves. They can get their teeth cleaned and get them fixed or whatever," said one patient.

While free clinics like this can be an effective way for people without dental insurance to receive emergency treatment for existing problems, there are many discount dental plans available to help people avoid serious dental problems in the first place.
