Cosmetic dentistry holds benefits for oral health, experts say Cosmetic dentistry may seem like it's all just for looks, but technological advancements allowing dentists to show their patients in greater detail why their mouth's cosmetics are so important to overall dental health.

Dr Brett Magnuson of Michigan is a cosmetic dentist who has been working to combine digital photography and specially designed computer programs to show his patients the changes his procedures will have on their teeth.

He will be leading a workshop on the topic at the upcoming American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry to teach other dentists his techniques.

The academy's Dr Caitlin Martini said that this kind of technological advancement benefiting cosmetic dentistry is so important because many people have problems that can be helped, but they don't understand the severity.

"Contemporary cosmetic dentistry is a comprehensive approach to total oral health care that combines art and science to achieve optimal dental function, health, and esthetics," she said.

Nearly three-quarters of all Americans believe that an unattractive smile can hurt a person's chances for career success, according to statistics from the academy.
