Debate over water fluoridation continues

Debate over water fluoridation continues The dental health benefits of fluoride treatments are widely known, but in some areas where the water is fluoridated, citizens are concerned about the health effects from ingesting the mineral, continuing the debate over the practice.

One board member of the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority in Pensacola Florida was elected to her position in 2008 after running on a platform of removing fluoride from the area's drinking water.

Elizabeth Campbell told the Pensacola News Journal "as long as we are not sure if we are harming anyone with the ingestion of fluoride, we should take it out."

But most in the medical community agree that fluoridated drinking water is safe, and helps people who not have access to dental care otherwise.

"It reaches individuals in all socioeconomic groups, not just people who visit the dentist," president of the Escambia-Santa Rosa Dental Association Andy Trammell told the news source.

The National Cancer Institute says that people who live where the water supply is fluoridated have significantly fewer cavities, and that the mineral can stop and even reverse tooth decay.
