Retirees need to budget approximately $250,000 for health and dental care

Retirees need to budget approximately $250,000 for health and dental care According to a recent study conducted by financial experts with Fidelity Investments, a 65-year-old couple retiring this year should budget approximately $250,000 to pay for health and dental care expenses.

The financial company's Retiree Health Care Costs Estimate report, which is expected to be published late next week, assumes that a couple has a Medicare policy and a lack of insurance through an employer, according to the Cosmetic Dentistry Guide.

Specifically, the study found that healthcare costs for the average American couple will be approximately $535 a month in the coming year, which is up 4.2 percent from last year and 56 percent from 2002.

Furthermore, a total of 51 percent of those surveyed indicated that they are paying out-of-pocket healthcare costs and 45 percent said they have purchased supplemental coverage to help pay their medical bills, TheStreet.com reports.

The Fidelity report did not take into account the Medicare and Medicaid changes that were created under the new healthcare reform bill.

Families who are searching for ways to save money on dental care may want to consider discount dental plans, which can save as much as 60 percent on most dental procedures.
