Free dental care services to be offered to select Kentucky youth

Free dental care services to be offered to select Kentucky youth Due to a $250,000 grant from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, free dental care services may soon be available to south-central Kentucky schoolchildren in need.

Before the end of April, the Barren River District Health Department will use the funding to purchase mobile dental equipment that participating dentists can use to offer preventative and restorative care to elementary and high school children across and eight-county area, according to WBKO.com. Officials with the department also plan on using the funding to bring dental education into the classroom.

"What we're wanting to do with the dental health program is to actually change a generation of thought, so that more folks begin to value dental health rather than just react to the problem," said Dennis Chaney, of the Barren River District Health Department.

He added that the initiative will first help serve Barren, Edmonson, Hart and Metcalfe counties as well as daycare centers operated by Community Action.

Tooth decay remains the single most common chronic childhood disease – five times more widespread than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever.
