Oregon dentist provides free dental care supplies to local children

Oregon dentist provides free dental care supplies to local children In February, as part of National Children's Dental Health Month, McKenzie Dental in Welches, Oregon, donated dental supplies and their time to local elementary school children in an effort to increase quality dental health practices in the area.

The facility's owner, Brad McKenzie, donated nearly 2,000 prevention packets, containing toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss and dental health pamphlets to six elementary schools in the Oregon Trail School District, according to The Sandy Post. He also led a local program to provide fluoride tablets to families who don't have access to public water systems that are fluoridated.

"Prevention is such a huge part of things, there's not a strong universal message right now," said McKenzie. "It is possible to live your whole life and never have a cavity."

The Pew Center on the States reports that dental care is the single greatest unmet need for health services among children, according to the News Review. Approximately 80 percent of dental disease in children is concentrated in 25 percent of kids, most of whom are from low-income households.

Regular visits to the dentist can help prevent avoidable dental health problems, such as infection, tooth decay, and cardiovascular disease, according to the American Dental Association.
