Florida healthcare clinic to open dental care facility for the underprivileged

Florida healthcare clinic to open dental care facility for the underprivileged On March 15, the Beaches Community Healthcare Clinic in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, will open a dental care facility to help provide services to local residents who do not have dental insurance.

Officials with the healthcare clinic, which recently celebrated its one-year anniversary of supplying free care to the underprivileged, said that the creation of a dental facility was overdue, according to Jacksonville.com.

"We've been getting calls since day one for dental," said Cindy Funkhouser, vice president of health services at the Sulzbacher Center in Jacksonville, which oversees the clinic. "It was a huge service gap here at the Beach."

The two-room dental center will fill cavities, provide teeth cleanings and perform complementary root canals to uninsured patients with incomes at or below 200 percent of the poverty level, which is $38,000 a year for a family of four. A nominal fee may be charged to employed patients, depending on their income.

Patients in need of care who do not have dental insurance may want to invest in a discount dental plan, which can provide significant savings on the majority of procedures.
