Dental hygienist students to provide free dental care to Idaho youth

Dental hygienist students to provide free dental care to Idaho youth Members of the Idaho State University Student Chapter of the American Dental Hygienists' Association will be providing free dental care services to underserved children on February 26-27 as part of the Give Kids a Smile program.

Children coming from uninsured families will be provided with a cleaning, x-rays, a fluoride applicatios and will have access to oral health education pamphlets. Moreover, kids who are in need of restorative care may receive a referral to a volunteer dentist at no charge.

"Giving service in the community is a great aspect of our education and our future career," says senior dental hygiene student Catherine Hyde.

"It is a privilege to help children who are in need and who would not otherwise receive care," added classmate Jennifer Schumaker.

Due to their charitable work, ISU dental hygiene students were awarded two National Community Service Awards sponsored by Tom's of Maine in 2005 and 2007. Students have also developed partnerships with dental care product manufacturers who were willing to donate supplies for the program.

While clinics provide a temporary reprieve from the expenses of dental insurance, they often do not provide access to follow-up care or a licensed dentist who can perform more invasive dental health procedures.
