Washington dentists participate in annual Children's Dental Day

Washington dentists participate in annual Children On February 6, approximately 150 Washington state families participated in the 20th annual Children's Dental Day, a collaborative event that encourages local dentists to donate care to the needy and the underprivileged who are struggling to pay for dental insurance, according to KNDO.com.

Children's dental health professionals from Columbia Basin Pediatric Dentistry in Kennewick and Advanced Pediatric Dentistry in Pasco provided free care to local kids without insurance. The value of the services donated on Saturday was worth approximately $50,000.

"Unfortunately when people are paying their bills I think dentistry is way down the line," said local dentist Rusty Walker, quoted by the news source. "However, there is a very strong need for dental care in this community."

Walker added that one out of every five children have significant dental problems which require professional care.

According to a Children's Dental Health Project report, low-income children who have their first dental exam by age one are less likely to visit emergency rooms for oral health problems. Moderate tooth decay during childhood can restrict physical development and may decrease the ability to learn.
