UCLA to provide free dental care to children
Updated: 2/4/2010 5:00:13 PM

UCLA to provide free dental care to children On February 5, as part of the nationwide service event known as Give Kids a Smile, the UCLA School of Dentistry will offer free dental care to children up to 14 years of age at the UCLA Venice Dental Center.

Student and resident dentists from the university, under the supervision of faculty, will offer a variety of dental care services to local children including cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments and urgent care. Practicing dentists from the West Los Angeles Dental Society will also be volunteering their time and services.

Officials at the school expect more than 300 children to attend the event, which will also provide families with nutritional counseling, insurance counseling and oral health education information. All participants will be seen on a first-come, first serve basis. No dental insurance will be necessary.

The event is celebrated as part of National Children's Dental Health Month, which raises awareness about the importance of oral health around the U.S.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their initial dental checkup by their first birthday.
