Expert: Dental health expenses can multiply if conditions go untreated

Many American families who have dropped dental insurance from their budgets because of recession-fueled financial constraints are finding that tooth decay and associated health complications may be the consequence of their decision.

According to the Mayo Clinic, cavities and tooth decay are among the most common health problems in the world and if untreated can result in toothaches, infection and tooth loss.

Dr Nicole Barrineau, a dentist at the Barrineau Family and Cosmetic Dentistry center told the Gulf Breeze News that untreated tooth decay could result in healthcare costs that are 10 times greater than the charge for an initial filling - especially if the individual does not have dental insurance.

"In some cases, simply maintaining regular checkups, brushing and flossing two times a day and using a prescription fluoride can be enough [to avoid cavities]," she added.

However, by regularly seeing a patient, dentists like Dr Barrineau are able to recommend various treatments that are aimed at preventing or stabilizing oral health conditions over time.
