New treatments look to make dental care pain-free

New treatments look to make dental care pain-free While some patients avoid the dent's chair in fear of a painful procedure, ongoing effort to make dental care easier took a step forward this week when BioDelivery Sciences International announced the successful completion of phase II of its trials on a dental surgery pain treatment.

The company has been at work developing a treatment that uses buprenorphine to reduce pain following third molar extraction dental surgery, the Triangle Business Journal reports.

The treatment proposes to use Bio-Erodible Muco-Adhesive (BEMA) technology, a thin, dissolvable film attached to the inner lining of the cheek, to deliver pain medication.

In the phase II trial, the company compared how their BEMA buprenorphine measured up against a placebo and oral oxycondone in pain management, finding that the prescribed doses appropriately relieved the pain associated with third molar extraction stemming from tooth decay.

"We believe that BEMA buprenorphine has the potential to become a major player in the treatment of pain by addressing a significant unmet market need by virtue of a lower propensity for abuse and addiction compared to other opioids such as oxycodone and morphine," Mark A. Sirgo, BioDelivery's CEO, told the news source.

According to the American Dental Association, tooth decay can be avoided by brushing twice a day and flossing regularly.
