Dental care industry suffering due to recession

Many dental care professionals are currently feeling the effects of the recession, but some say the most urgent problem is that so many Americans are postponing regular checkups and necessary treatments to cut costs.

As the country continues to look for a way out of its economic troubles, many people in the U.S. have decided to cancel their dentist appointments in an effort to save money, according to the Herald Tribune. The American Dental Association (ADA) says that more than 50 percent of general practice dentists have lost money and patients in 2009, which could be an indication of how serious the country's dental problems are.

"Business is down about 25 percent over last year," Dr Kevin Krause told the publication. Krause recently bought a practice in Sarasota, Florida, from a dentist who went bankrupt. "You try to talk to the patient and make it work for them, and don't expect everything up front."

Some dentists like Krause have tried lowering fees, reports the news source. But such measures aren't always enough for individuals who have serious dental problems and little money.
