Kentucky governor announces dental care initiative

The governor of Kentucky traveled to Perry County to discuss his dental care initiative, which makes children a priority.

Governor Steve Beshear was in Hazard recently, according to a local CBS station. He went to Dennis Wooton Elementary School to talk about children's dental health, an issue he considers important.

"We've got a total of about $2 million that we are going to direct toward an oral health program," he said to the TV station. "One of the efforts that we are doing is to get some training: bring our general dentists in and give them some incentives."

Of Kentucky's 120 counties, 28 have pediatric dentists, reports the news source. Kaiser Health News claims that underprivileged children have twice as many cavities as financially comfortable kids. Furthermore, children in general lose millions of hours of school each year because of dental problems.

Issues with dental hygiene can be avoided if healthy routines are established early on in childhood. Kids need to be told that brushing twice a day and flossing regularly could save them from unnecessary trips to the dentist.
