Dentist spends own cash to promote dental health

A dentist in Arizona will spend his own money this Halloween to try to prevent kids from eating too much candy.

Dr Kelly Wettstein says he will pay children one dollar per pound of candy this year, according to the East Valley Tribune. His wife says he isn't trying to be a wet blanket, he just wants to protect young mouths from tooth decay and gum disease.

"There's just so much excess," said the dentist, who lives in Chandler. "You feel that constant pressure. The kids want more and more of it."

The Wettsteins own a practice in town and held their candy buy-back last year too. They collected 375 pounds of sweets, reports the news source.

Dr Wettstein isn't the only dentist holding such an event. The Tribune says that 1,300 other dentists will do the same this year.

In addition to not eating too much sugar, the American Dental Association says that people who want to avoid tooth decay should brush twice a day and floss regularly too. Plastic sealants can also be applied to teeth as a preventative measure against decay.
