Study: Black males may need dental care more than others

While plaque buildup in one's mouth can be detrimental toward a person's dental health, it may be more of an health issue for black men.

According to a new study from Indiana University School of Dentistry, researchers found black males had an increase in activity with total white blood cell count, a known risk factor for heart disease and other cardiac conditions.

A total of 128 black and white men and women participated in the study that had the goal of examining the link between oral inflammatory disease and heart disease risk. According to the research team, none of the participants had periodontal disease at the time of the study.

Dr Michael Kowolik, who led the study, called the finding a possible "cause for concern."

"Our observation that with poor dental hygiene white blood cell activity increased in black men but not black women or whites of either sex suggests both gender and racial differences in the inflammatory response to dental plaque," Kowolik said.

While routine dental care is important for one's overall health, a regular dental checkup can help people stay clear of developing conditions like tooth decay, which can lead to other serious health conditions.
