Older people who do not perform the necessary upkeep on their teeth run the risk of negatively affecting their dental health.

However, those who do administer regular dental care can also have an increased chance of developing tooth decay because of past dental procedures.

Dr Gary Fresques, a dentist in Colorado, told the Craig Daily Press that older people may need to replace dental care work such as fillings and crowns once they reach the age of 50.

"The biggest problem with the elderly is they basically outlive their teeth," Fresques said. "Without exception, every (older) patient that comes in my office has tons of food and debris stuck in their teeth and have rampant decay."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one-third of adults aged 65 and older have untreated tooth decay.

If left untreated, tooth decay, particularly in older patients, can lead to other serious health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
Many dental care officials have suggested older people get regular dental checkups to ensure their dental health remains optimal.
