Orthodontist: Keeping plaque off dental braces importantAs the school year starts, some kids may be beginning the new year with dental braces they received over the summer.

While it's good dental health to have them on one's teeth, especially at a younger age, one dental professional is urging children take extra care of their teeth during this time.

C. Moody Alexander, an orthodontist in Dallas, Texas, told the Dallas Morning News that keeping plaque off of teeth that have been fitted with braces may be challenging, but important.

Alexander added that unattended plaque can cause maladies in the teeth and gums, as well as extend the time a person needs to have braces, which may be motivation enough for some kids to keep them clean.

Children who don't develop routine dental care may suffer serious health conditions in the future. According to the American Dental Association, childhood tooth decay, is the single most common chronic childhood disease.

Parents who are having some difficulty getting their child to brush their teeth, whether they have braces or not, may want to consider turning the nightly routine into a kind of game or letting them listen to music off an MP3 player while they brush.
