White or silver fillings: what's best for dental health?

White or silver fillings: what Dr Sultan Sherzoy a dentist practicing in Bergen County, New Jersey explains that there are a few differences between white or composite cavity fillings and the traditional silver fillings. Both tremendously enhance dental health for they fill and protect a decayed part of the tooth.

Composite fillings look more natural, Sherzoy says, and their addition constitutes cosmetic dentistry considering that silver fillings are both safe and effective.

However, the white fillings are also more resistant to tooth fracture and some patients find that their teeth are less sensitive to heat and cold. Composites also do not contain mercury.

With the recent concerns about silver fillings made into a mercury alloy, Amalgam, some may now prefer to use the white fillings.

The Food and Drug Administration wants to reassure patients that silver fillings that contain mercury are safe, as it recently released its final resolution on Amalgam.

Officials stated that the levels of mercury released by Amalgam are not high enough to be harmful and that doctors and patients should decide what is best for them.

The American Dental Administration suggests that adults brush and floss twice each day to avoid tooth decay.
