Though many communities in the U.S. have added fluoride in their local water supply as a way to improve dental health, one school across the pond is attempting to use that same idea and apply it to milk.

Health officials recently introduced fluoridated milk into 36 Sheffield schools in England, the UK newspaper The Star reports.

The initiative is part of a campaign to prevent tooth decay in the students of the school, according to the article. The campaign also handed out free toothpaste and educated students about the importance of daily dental care.

In the U.S., fluoridation has usually occurred in the water supply and has reportedly been successful, particularly in areas where some residents may not have access to dental insurance.

Dr Johnny Smith, a dentist in Mississippi, told ClarionLedger.com that he hopes a new state regulation into water fluoridation will help the area of Greenwood.

"I've seen tooth decay in all ages, from little kids all the way up to the old folks," Smith said about Greenwood's residents. "And fluoride in the water will help all of them to some degree."

The American Dental Association says that childhood tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease.
