Dental insurance less common than cell phones
Updated: 7/27/2009 7:00:21 PM

Dental insurance less common than cell phonesWhile scientific studies show that dental health is extremely important to overall bodily health, the number of Americans without dental insurance has grown by leaps and bounds. Recent studies show that approximately 55 percent of the population has dental insurance, substantially less than the over 80 percent that are believed to be enrolled in some sort of cell phone plan.

An inability to pay for dental care is one of the main reasons cited by the population for avoiding the recommended dental checkups so important to maintaining dental health.

Regular checkups for both adults and children are recommended by dentists because most problems involving dental health can be treated and prevented fairly easily when found in early stages, but become substantially more difficult, painful and expensive as time goes on.

Dental health has a complicated relationship with general health. Dentists have been encouraged to take advantage of checkups to note any dental disease that may be linked to other, more systemic chronic disease. Inflammation of the gums may also indicate inflammation elsewhere and has been linked to such diseases as stroke, heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cognitive decline in old age.
