Cosmetic dentistry can also help dental health

Cosmetic dentistry is still a booming business in both Canada and the U.S., with patients spending over $2 billion on prettier smiles, according to an article in the Montreal Gazette. Much of the spending goes to dental veneers, teeth whitening and crown and bridgework.

While vanity can play a role, cosmetic dentistry is also about a broader level of dental care, according to dentist Roni Berbari, "The bite of the teeth is basic. You have to have a good foundation, so we look at overall dental health, not just the cosmetic aspect."

The article gives the example of Janique Laflamme, whose jaw was disfigured in a car accident when she was 8. Three years of dental surgery has restored her ability to chew with her whole mouth and restored the symmetry of her face.

"Now, finally, I can smile in family photos," Laflamme said.

The article discusses osseointegration, or tooth implants, which are designed for people who require work far beyond what braces can provide.

"The goal is to correct the function of the jaw where the bite and facial alignment are off," according to Dr. Tim Head, "which can affect the gastro-intestinal process and the aesthetics of the face."
