Dentist reminds parents of early dental care benefits

With news from across the pond about the significant increase in young children suffering from tooth decay, it may be a wakeup call for some parents to ensure their child is getting adequate dental care.

To help, one Minnesota dentist is reminding parents that caring for a child's dental health can start when they are quite young.

Thomas Sitzer, a pediatric dentist, told the Post-Bulletin there has been a rising rate of childhood cavities and tooth decay at his practice.

"I've seen cavities in children as young as 1 1/2 (years old)," Sitzer said. "Don't be fooled by juice. There's sugar in them, too, and citric acid."

In terms of when parents should start administering dental care, Sitzer suggests to clean the gums of their infants, even before the first tooth appears, according to the article. By dampening a small piece of textured gauze and wiping down gums after feeding, parents could be helping their children avoid dental health problems in the future.

The next difficult stage may be when the child is older and asked to administer teeth cleaning on themselves. One way to combat foster this behavior is for the parent and child to brush their teeth together nightly.
