Survey: dental care professionals have influence over patients

Dental hygienists may have an influence with their patients that extends past providing them with dental health advice.

A total of 81 percent of people who responded to a new survey conducted by Mintel International Group Limited said they completely trusted the products recommended by their dental health professional.

The study consisted of 1,957 people who were asked about their relationship with their dental hygienist in an online survey, which was distributed in March 2007. The research also found women were more likely than men to visit their dentist and that 69 percent of those women were more likely to shop for oral care products for the entire household.

Researchers said the findings showed people were listening to their dental hygienist and that the majority of them at least appeared to be attempting to improve their dental health.

This follows news from the American Dental Association that states the rate of tooth decay among younger children has risen when compared to last year, prompting the organization to urge parents to administer dental care on their child at an early age.
