Dental health may suffer with halt to water fluoridation in Vermont

A Vermont city is considering halting fluoridating its water supply, which has sparked a debate about the practice that was started to prevent tooth decay.

Burlington, Vermont started adding fluoride to its water in 1952 and is now considering ending the practice due to the state's Board of Health suggesting it may be harmful to "certain subsets of the population," BurlingtonFreePress.com reports.

However, according to a March 2006 ballot, approximately 70 percent of Vermont voters said they wanted the city to continue fluoridating the water supply, which has been linked to improved dental health, according to the article.

Aside from the voters, other health care officials have supported continuing dental care through the water.

"The health department strongly supports continuing community water fluoridation," said Karen Garbarino, of the Vermont Department of Health, Fox44.net reports.

Adding fluoride to water may also help maintain dental health for some families unable to afford dental insurance in the current weakening economy.

The American Dental Association also recommends water fluoridation as a way to achieve optimal dental health, as well as preventing tooth decay.
