Keeping up with dental health through the years
Updated: 1/7/2009 4:00:25 PM
Keeping up with dental health through the yearsSome people think that it is inevitable to lose your teeth as you age, but this is not necessarily true, according to the Academy of General Dentistry.

In fact, a lifetime of good dental care - which includes brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups - can help you keep your teeth well into retirement.

When you get older, however, your dental care needs may change. For instance, 25 percent of people between the ages of 65 and 74 have severe gum disease, the AGD says.

If gum disease (gingivitis) progresses untreated, it can result in tooth loss. Those who suspect they have symptoms of gingivitis should see a dentist, who can prescribe a course of action.

Some older people find that keeping up with dental care can be a challenge, particularly if they suffer from arthritis or another health condition.

A dentist will be able to recommend a product that can minimize pain - for example, an electric toothbrush removes most of the need to move the brush back and forth, according to the American Dental Hygienists' Association.
