AGD: Swimmers, watch your dental health Despite top-notch dental care, people who spend a lot of time in a swimming pool may find their teeth are developing stains.

That is because chemically treated water can cause teeth to turn yellowish-brown because of its high pH level, according to the Academy of General Dentistry.

This condition is known as "swimmer's calculus" and is not uncommon among those who swim competitively or otherwise expose their bodies to the water in a pool, explained AGD spokesperson Dr J Frank Collins.

He recommended that anyone who sees symptoms of this condition should speak to their dentist and perhaps increase the frequency of their dental checkups.

Meanwhile, past AGD president Dr E "Mac" Edington is warning against another potential dental health pitfall found in a swimming pool: accidents.

"Swimming underwater and quickly coming to the surface causes some children to hit the hard ledge, loosening the front tooth," he said.

If a parent notices that their child has chipped or damaged a tooth, the American Dental Association advises that they visit a dentist as soon as possible to assess the damage.
