Keep toothbrush away from toilet for dental health

Not only is it important to adhere to a regular brushing routine, but now a person must be careful where they leave their toothbrush when not in use.

A study from the University of Arizona has found the placement of one's toothbrush can be in a viable germ zone, thus cutting back on dental health, JConline.com reports. Apparently, anywhere near the toilet is a bad place to leave one's toothbrush since the water can spray up to five feet after a flush, which can potentially land on your toothbrush.

The university researchers suggest keeping one's toothbrush in the medicine cabinet or in a nearby cupboard, according to the website. However, the dental care implement should not be housed in a plastic closed container, except for short periods of travel.

Robert W Golden, a Purdue University biosafety officer, said those containers "will encourage bacterial or fungal growth," especially if the toothbrush is wet, states JConline.com. It's better to keep the toothbrush upright and dry to maintain dental health.

The American Dental Association recommends people replace their toothbrush every three to four months, or when the bristles become frayed from use for good dental care.
