Program to help improve children's dental health

In an effort to improve the dental health of children living in low-income housing, a state health department has teamed up with a national organization to address the issue of childhood tooth decay.

The North Dakota Department of Health, North Dakota Department of Human Services and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) announced yesterday their new partnership to establish dental health homes for more than 3,600 children enrolled in the state's oral health program called Head Start, ExamHealth.com reports.

Head Start has identified poor dental care as one of the more common chronic diseases of childhood, according to the article. The new partnership aims to develop a network of pediatric and general dentists to partner with Head Start.

Kimberlie Yineman, director of the Department of Health's Oral Health Program, told the news provider statistics show children from families with low incomes may suffer a higher rate of tooth decay, possibly because of a lack of dental insurance.
