North Dakota launches kids' dental care program Updated: 12/16/2008 8:00:22 PM Print Article Email Article           In recent months, many U.S. states have focused attention on making sure that children from low-income families who do not have dental insurance or cannot afford dental care get the treatment they need. North Dakota is the latest state to announce a program to reduce tooth decay and other dental health problems among kids. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Head Start Home Initiative aims to arrange so-called "dental homes" - or regular dental care - for children who take part in Head Start in North Dakota In this way, kids who may not have dental insurance or access to checkups can develop a relationship with a local dentist for their long-term dental care. Kimberlie Yineman of the Department of Health's Oral Health Program told the Jamestown Sun that the initiative "reflects an understanding that oral health education, prevention and early diagnosis and treatment contribute to a child's healthy development." The Centers for Disease Control has singled out tooth decay as being the most common chronic childhood disease.
