Dental care might not be the first thing you think of when considering a gift for the holiday season, but for some people it can provide just the dental health boost they need to get through the coming months pain-free.

California dentist Kevin Welsh told the Redlands Daily Facts that his practice will be offering free dental care services such as teeth cleaning, dental extractions, fillings and denture adjustments as a gesture of seasonal goodwill.

He explained that by donating a day of his time - and that of his office staff - they can help make a difference in the lives of those who may not have dental insurance or a reasonable way to pay for dental care.

"I see it every day, children that come in here that need dental work with little or no insurance," he told the news provider.

Approximately 200 people took part in last year's event, but Welch said this year he expects more to turn up, due to the nation's poor economy.

Tooth decay is the most common preventable disease found in children worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.
