Some low-income children in Nebraska recently received some needed dental care from a group of volunteers who are determined to bridge the dental health gap.
Kids in Omaha who qualify for the services are able to receive dental checkups, teeth cleanings, sealants and other dental care procedures, the Omaha World-Herald reports.
Around 1,700 youngsters will participate in the Sealing Smiles initiative in 2008, which is largely staffed by dental residents and dental hygiene students from nearby universities and medical centers.
Program director Karen Hicks told the news provider that dental care sometimes gets sidelined when parents are thinking about their children's needs.
"When you're trying to make rent and have food for your family, dental care isn't the number one priority," she said.
Tooth decay has been identified by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Surgeon General as a major health concern, which is also largely preventable.
Families looking for a way to help fund dental care may be interested in discount dental plans. These plans are an alternative to dental insurance, providing discounts of between 10 and 60 percent on most dental procedures.
