Getting rid of plaque and protecting dental health

People are increasingly paying more attention to proper dental care, as more research draws links between dental health and overall health.

To adequately protect your teeth and gums, it is important to address one of the major threats to dental health - plaque.

Plaque is sticky film of bacteria that is made up of a number of germs that exist on the teeth and in the rest of the mouth.

After eating, acids from these bacteria attack tooth enamel, which can cause it to break down, resulting in cavities. Other types of plaque can cause periodontal disease.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research reminds dental patients that keeping plaque at bay requires a few simple steps: brushing, flossing and having a regular dental checkup.

People are advised to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque, as well as flossing once a day - ideally before bed.

When you visit the dentist, you can ask them to assess the effectiveness of your plaque removal routine and make any suggestions that may improve your dental care.
