Mobile dentists aim to bridge dental insurance gap

Recent headlines have focused on the effects that high costs related to dental insurance and dental care may have on children's teeth.

Now, an article in the Mansfield News Journal shows how some dentists are seeking to bring preventive dental care to kids who may not be able to afford it.

The Mobile Dentists Smile Program team travels across the country to provide dental checkups, teeth cleaning, x-rays and other basic services to young people who may not have dental insurance or whose parents do not have money to pay for dental care.

Mike Marshall, a principal at Madison South School in Ohio, said that the dentists play a valuable role in improving students' dental health.

"Some of the children may have not seen the dentist and in the third or fourth grade we've seen massive tooth decay," he told the news provider.

Discount dental plans, an alternative to dental insurance, are an option for families and individuals to reduce dental care costs at participating dentists.

These plans provide discounts of between 10 and 60 percent on most dental procedures.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease.
