Teeth whitening gum inspires smokers to quit
Updated: 11/11/2008 6:01:13 PM

Teeth whitening gum inspires smokers to quit Dentists are clear that smoking is bad for patients' dental health and may contribute to the development of several diseases. However, many people do not give up the habit.

Now, a new survey by Nicorette has found that some smokers may be motivated to quit if they use a product that promises teeth whitening benefits.

Nearly half of those responding to the survey who planned to quit smoking said that the prospect of yellow, discolored teeth has contributed to their decision.

This motivation was more pronounced among people under the age of 35, with 68 percent concerned about how smoking was affecting their dental health and 82 percent saying the effects made them more likely to want to quit.

Lead researcher Saul Shiffman of the University of Pittsburgh said that the introduction of a teeth whitening gum that also helps smokers give up the habit could be beneficial.

"Anything that encourages a smoker to quit is a positive thing, but they need to quit successfully," he commented.

The dental health risks of smoking include an increased likelihood of suffering from gum disease and oral cancer, among other problems.
