Gum-related cosmetic dentistry 'on the rise'

More people - particularly young people - have been choosing to have cosmetic dentistry aimed at reducing the amount of the upper gum that is on display when they smile, it has been claimed.

Periodontist Dr Alex Farnoosh suggested that people these days are more aware of cosmetic dentistry options, which means that they will proactively seek out their options.

"In the past, more people just assumed the condition couldn't be corrected, so they would wait years before hearing about their options," he explained.

In addition, Farnoosh said that younger people are becoming more concerned about their dental health and the aesthetic value of their smile in regard to their career goals.

He suggested that patients may be seeking to address their gummy smile so they can feel more confident at work and in their social life.

Also, he explained that as the amount of the upper gum on display is largely a result of genetics, people may be more likely to choose cosmetic dentistry if their parents have suffered from this particular problem.

According to the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the industry as a whole has been growing year-on-year.
