Orthodontists buy back candy to protect dental health

It is a difficult season to protect your dental health. Halloween brings nearly unlimited opportunities to nibble - and gorge - on candy, which can end up being a dental hygiene nightmare for kids with braces.

That is why the American Association of Orthodontists has introduced a scheme to exchange patients' riskier treats with items that will not pose such a threat to dental health.

This year, participating orthodontists could collect as many as 32,000 pounds of candy, according to the AAO.

In return, they will offer movie tickets, gift certificates, cash or other alternative treats.

The program was created to help cut down on the number of post-Halloween emergency visits that are scheduled as a result of certain types of candies damaging orthodontic work.

"Keep in mind that some treats are not braces-friendly. If you have braces, you should avoid any foods that are sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy," commented Dr Raymond George, Sr, president of the AAO.

Meanwhile, other dentists and dental experts have recently been warning kids and parents about sour candies, which contain high levels of tooth-damaging acid.
