Study: Essential dental care safe for pregnant women

Study: Essential dental care safe for pregnant women The American Dental Association recommends that pregnant women practice good dental hygiene habits to promote both their own wellbeing and the health of their unborn child.

And a study published in the June 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association reveals that women who are 13 to 21 weeks pregnant may safely undergo essential dental care treatment.

To arrive at their conclusion, researchers compared the medical records of a group of pregnant women who received essential dental treatment with those who did not receive such treatment.

They looked for adverse events such as nonlive births, hospitalization, fetal or congenital anomalies and miscarriages.

The authors of the study said their findings reveal that receiving dental treatment for moderate-to-sever cavities or abscessed teeth does not endanger the health of women who are between 13 and 21 weeks' pregnant - or the health of their babies.

"Use of topical and local anesthetics for scaling and root planing also was not associated with an increased risk of experiencing these adverse events and outcomes," they added.

The Academy of General Dentistry recommends that pregnant women postpone any elective dental procedures until after they have given birth.
