Dental team provides care to soldiers in Baghdad

The dental needs of soldiers currently stationed in Baghdad are tended to by a team consisting of three dental professionals and two lab assistants, according to a report on KWTX.com.

Over the past nine months, more than 1,700 patients have benefited from the services available at Riva Ridge Troop Medical Clinic, which include everything from fillings to root canals.

Sergeant Tara Phillips, the lead dental technician at the clinic, told the news provider that the team caters to soldiers' schedules.

"We try our hardest to see soldiers before their convoy leaves, even if that means extending our hours into the evening," she explained. "They are why we are here."

Root canals and extractions are the most common procedures that are taken care of by the dental team, but they also carry out some cosmetic procedures.

In the near future, the clinic hopes it will be able to set up a more traditional dentist's office - complete with suction, hydraulic chair and lamp - to further help patients.

The Department of Defense has a classification system that ranks soldiers according to their dental health, to better aid commanders in making sure units are ready and able to perform.
