Dental device helps migraine sufferers

Dentists have praised a simple dental device that has been shown to be highly effective in preventing migraines, chronic headaches and jaw ache.

Dr James Boyd invented the NTI-Tension Suppression System (NTI-TSS) in response to his own chronic headaches and migraines, TheTelgraph.com reports.

He decided that his problems were due to the contraction of the muscles in his jaw, which caused his teeth to grind together.

Dr Boyd therefore invented the NTI-TSS device to prevent the molars and canines from touching at night, preventing teeth grinding and relieving the tension that is causing the pain, as well as preserving dental work.

Clinical trials have proved the accuracy of his theory - 82 percent of migraine sufferers using the NTI-TSS shows an average 77 percent reduction in attacks within the first eight weeks of use.

The website spoke to dentist Dr Gregory Wigton, who has been using the device in his clinic for six years. "There are no side effects, it's relatively inexpensive and nothing has been permanently altered; it's noninvasive," he remarked.

"After using this basic appliance, I can see the difference when the patients come back in … they look more rested, happier and healthier, and they tell me they feel so much better," he added.

Tooth grinding, also known as bruxism, is known to cause a number of problems both for oral and overall health.
