(ARA) - A slumping economy, the rising cost of food and gas, and a volatile stock market have sent many investors packing while wreaking havoc on their investment portfolios and retirement plans. However, there are opportunities to make money in today's market using short-term strategies and the right trading tools.
Stephen Ehrlich, CEO of Lightspeed Financial, one of the largest trading firms in the United States dedicated to retail active traders, says there's a technique that is working for many sophisticated, disciplined investors called active trading.
"If you look at certain stocks, you can probably identify a number of opportunities to buy and sell throughout the day to make a profit," says Ehrlich. "In order to capitalize, one needs to be armed with the fastest, most sophisticated trading technology that provides the streaming, real-time data and rapid order execution necessary to implement active trading strategies with success."
He offers this example to illustrate how active trading works: Say stock XYZ opened on a particular day at $40.50 a share, went up to $42, then down to $38 before closing at $40.51 a share. If you are a buy-and-hold investor and own XYZ, you only earned a penny per share for the day. Not a significant gain. However, a Lightspeed customer could have capitalized on the price swings in XYZ and made a significant return on capital.
"If you were tracking the market with our proprietary trading software you would have been able to identify multiple buy and sell opportunities in XYZ throughout the trading day and potentially converted those price swings into profit. For example, a trader could have bought the stock at its opening price of $40.50 and then sold it at $42, making a $1.50 profit per share. The trader could have then sold the stock short (selling borrowed stock, then buying it back at a lower price and returning the borrowed shares) at $42 and then bought the stock back at the lower price of $38, making a $4 profit per share," says Ehrlich.
