New laser technology tackles dental problems

A new laser treatment designed to tackle Periolase is currently being trialed in Ohio.

The laser eliminates the need for a painful operation which involved cutting gum tissue and requires narcotic painkillers and a substantial recovery time.

Dentists use the laser to kill the bacteria associated with Periolase, teeth are then cleaned and a second laser used to remove any remaining bacteria or dead tissue.

Twinsburg Dental Associates was one of the first dental practices in Ohio to introduce the FDA-approved laser procedure and have so far treated 20 patients using the new technology.

Dr Larry told local news station WKYC: "With the laser, we're sealing the area when were done. In conventional surgery they're still using scalpels and sutures and there's still an area for bacteria to get in there."

Practice partner Dr Larry Harlan added that the treatment is preferable to traditional methods as it involves "eliminating the reservoir of bacteria that are causing the problem and then allowing the body's own regenerative or stem cells to take over and grow bone and tissue".
