Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon underwent a second emergency surgery on Friday after a brain scan showed increased cranial pressure and bleeding.
Doctors at Hadassah Ein-Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem said his blood pressure had also changed.
Sharon has been in a medically induced coma since the surgery to minimize brain damage from the hemorrhage. After 72 hours of heavy sedation, doctors plan to gradually waken him.
Hadassah hospital director Shlomo Mor-Yosef, M.D., told reporters that Sharon's pupils were responding to stimulation. This is a positive sign of brain activity.
Several medical experts have told reporters that if the 77-year-old leader lives, he will experience a serious loss of function.
Sharon suffered a small stroke on Dec. 18. Some speculate the anti-clotting medicine doctors put him on after that stroke led to the second, more-serious one on Wednesday.
