Can chewing gum improve dental health?

A new chewing gum has the ability to help strengthen and rebuild tooth enamel, according to the manufacturer.

Trident Xtra Care contains Recaldent, a form of calcium that is derived from milk.

This ingredient has been found to contribute to tooth remineralization by filling in crevices where cavities could appear, the company states.

Trident Xtra Care is available in two flavors - peppermint and cool mint.

Dr Doris Tancredi, vice president of regulatory and emerging science at Cadbury Schweppes Americas Confectionary, explained that the product will help teeth "become stronger and less vulnerable to future damage".

The manufacturer believes the product "represents a significant advance" in the chewing gum market.

In April, an article in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry suggested that a product known as BasicMints could help fight cavities.

It works by neutralizing plaque acids and encouraging the remineralization of a tooth's structure.
