In September, New York will become the latest US state to require proof of good dental health for schoolchildren, it has emerged.

Families will be obligated to provide a certificate demonstrating that kids have visited a dentist prior to entering second, fourth, seventh and tenth grades, the Associated Press reports.

Those who are unable to do so will receive a list of dental professionals who will examine the children for free or at low cost.

New York Senate Education Committee Chairman Stephen Saland told the news provider: "We certainly know and appreciate the importance of having children have these examinations and screenings."

A total of seven other states already require a clean bill of dental health at various points in a child's school career.

According to a recent report from the Dental Health Foundation in Oakland, more than one in four elementary school children have tooth decay that has not been treated.
