A misaligned tooth bite could cause problems for other parts of the body, an expert has said.
Speaking to the Huffington post, Dr Jay Neuhaus revealed how he uses neuromuscular dentistry to measure - and potentially correct - imbalances in the alignment and efficiency of a person's teeth.
He uses a Tekscan tooth pressure device which measures the pressure exerted by each individual tooth, similar to the methods used to measure foot dynamics in order to prescribe orthotics for foot, ankle, knee, hip and back complaints.
Although this may seem like an unusual practice, Dr Neuhaus believes, as a number of other medical professionals do, that "underlying muscular pathology", such as a poor bite, can have serious health implications.
He cites tinnitus, lockjaw, loss of hearing, inflammatory joint disease, arthritis and synovitis as just some of the problems that could be caused outside of the mouth, as well as the breakdown of natural teeth.
A number of other factors can also damage teeth, such a diet high in energy drinks and sugar, smoking, or poor dental care.
