A correctional institution in Milwaukee is preparing some if its inmates for a bright future in dental laboratory work.

Women from one of the wings at Taycheedah Correctional Institution near Fond du Lac have been trained to make dentures in a lab at the facility, which are then used for other inmates in the state.

Not only does the program save the state money on its dental care costs, but it also gives the women involved a better chance of finding gainful employment once they leave prison, the Journal Sentinel reports.

"I could see myself going into this," said Amber Haviland, an inmate from Wausau, told the journal as she adjusted a set of upper dentures to match a set of lowers.

Following President Bush's signing of the Second Chance Act, which makes rehabilitation a priority in the justice system, the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board is set to begin a one year $400,000 pilot to train and employ workers with little job experience.

Dental labs are likely to be an area where jobs are available for qualified applicants - Professor Gerald Ziebert, director of the prosthodontics program at the Marquette University School of Dentistry, told the newspaper that with America's population living longer the demand for dentures is growing.

Dental implants are also now becoming a popular option for those who have lost their teeth, as they are closer to the real thing than dentures.
