Popularity of energy drinks 'is damaging the nation's dental health'

It is estimated the energy drinks market will hit $10 billion by 2010, but scientists have warned that the high pH levels in the beverages can cause tooth erosion and decay.

According to the Kansas City infoZine, researchers have found that while all soda drinks are bad for teeth, energy drinks are the worst.

It cited the November-December 2007 issue of General Dentistry, which featured a report on the "buffering capacity" of different drinks, meaning their ability to neutralize acid.

The results showed that high-energy and sports drinks had the highest mean buffering capacity, which means they are most likely to erode tooth enamel.

Experts are particularly concerned about adolescents and young adults - soft drinks are popular among that age group, but their teeth are especially vulnerable to attack from the acids found in sodas as their tooth enamel is still forming.

Recently an associate professor at the University of Texas found that the prevalence rate of dental erosion among ten to 14-year-olds in the US is now at 30 per cent.
